About this book

A classic novel for women set in the wealthy middle class on the English countryside at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century. The novel takes place at the very end of the 18th century and depicts a peaceful, untroubled life, everyday amusements, joys, and worries in a family with five daughters to be married off. The family's tranquility is disrupted when a wealthy young and unmarried man appears on the horizon. Marriage was the only option for a woman's financial security at that time, so it is necessary to immediately weave a complex web of sophisticated intrigues around the potential suitor, from which he would not be able to escape. The author gives her novel an ironic undertone, a unique sense of humor, and expresses an exceptional sense of the absurdity of the social reality of that time. All the characters in the novel - the stoic father, his energetic wife, and the five marriage-hungry daughters - have long since entered the consciousness of readers all over the world.
