Novel of an English classic, composed of six grotesque, pseudodetective short stories. Six freely connected short stories form a paraphrase of the detective genre, in which apparent symptoms of terrifying crimes lead to the revelation of new, surprising occupations by which members of a bizarre secret club earn a living. The novel is a humorous polemic with classical detective stories, which became a kind of prelude to Chesterton's later famous stories of Father Brown, and at the same time a typical Chestertonian celebration of free fantasy and the diversity of life.
