About this book

This bilingual edition of the famous poem by a world-renowned author, written around 1874 and first published two years later, is a tale of an adventurous journey undertaken by a somewhat disparate group of eight chapters. The group's goal is to catch a remarkable creature called Snárk, but the author does not specify who or what Snárk is, and it's not particularly important. Snárk can be understood as a concept representing an elusive, futile, and unfulfilled desire to achieve success or perfection. The author illustrates this idea through the efforts of a curious unit of hunters, represented by "beasts" such as a bell-founder, a baker, a beaver, a lawyer, or a banker. They all know that "Snárk is a peculiar creature; noble, dignified, / not like other game. / Let's try clever and foolish solutions: / every chance is equal today!" However, this group ultimately finds the Boťouch, a creature symbolizing disappointment and deception.
